For an illustration exercise, I am drawing the same fictional character with three hair colors while leaving the clothing and face unchanged. A blue top and a subdued background are already part of the design, so the hair needs to work within that arrangement. My first options are dark brown, light copper, and silver, chosen because they create noticeably different relationships with the existing colors. My search for ways to explain warm and cool color choices brought me to a personal color test as a starting point for further reading. I would like the terminology to help with critique, while leaving room for the intentional color exaggeration that illustration often uses. I need a way to discuss visual emphasis, since a hair color that looks interesting close up may dominate the smaller image. What sequence would you suggest for a side by side review, a value check, and a short critique from other students? A clear set of comparison questions would help my classmates explain their choices in terms of the character rather than personal taste alone.
